About the Course

This course was developed by the Queensland Police Service (QPS) - Weapons Licensing Branch and is an accredited, mandatory course in Queensland. The course is owned by the QPS who have issued a license to Talon Training to deliver it. It is nationally recognised, however it has been specifically designed to meet the Qld Licensing requirements. Therefore the certificate will be a Statement of Attainment of the individual units of weapons Categories sort. We are a Registered Training Organisation, #41173.
Your Trainer will present the material in a clear manner and assist you with individual difficulties.
Anyone 18 yrs. of age or older if they satisfy the following criteria:
  • Are a resident of Qld
  • Are a fit and proper person
  • Have not, within the past 5 years, been convicted of a disqualifying offence including misuse of drugs, misuse of weapons, the use or threatened use of violence, or been the subject of a domestic violence protection order
  • Have a genuine reason for a licence
  • Can demonstrate appropriate training in the safe use of firearms, and
  • Have access to secure storage.

Minimum numbers apply to this course. While we manage to run most of our courses, unfortunately the odd one may be cancelled or postponed due to lack of numbers or trainer illness. The units comprise a combination of the following:

WSCQPS001A Demonstrate knowledge of firearms legislation, firearm & community safety
WSCQPS002A Demonstrate the safe use of Category A and Category B firearms
WSCQPS003A Demonstrate the safe use of Category C firearms
WSCQPS004A Demonstrate the safe use of Category D firearms
WSCQPS005A Demonstrate the safe use of Category H firearms

Not available for this course as safety certificate must be valid within 12 months of licence application.

Marking and Assessing Your Work

Your Trainer & Assessor must deem you competent before a certificate can be sent to you. All work will be completed in the classroom under assessment conditions. You will be required to answer all assessment questions and obtain a score of 100%
You will be required to answer written assessments provided by your Trainer.

The Training Day

Typically the course runs between 10:30 am until 3:30 pm. Your trainer has discretion on the number of breaks. Usually, there will always be a morning tea, lunch in addition to smaller coffee breaks as the group requires.
Your Trainer & Assessor must deem you competent before a certificate can be sent to you. All work will be completed in the classroom under assessment conditions. You will be required to answer all assessment questions and obtain a score of 100%. In the case of illness or an emergency you will be booked into the next suitable course.
You will need to discuss this with the Trainer. Phones are not permitted on the Shooting Range or during practical task activities. However, generally it won’t be a problem in the classroom, as long as the phone is on vibrate and the other students are not interrupted. NO PHONES will be permitted on the firing range during the live fire assessments for any reason whatsoever.

Live fire component of this course is conducted at approved ranges.
Snacks and drinks are available from the canteen.
