The Security Guard Firearms Re-certification is required under the Weapons Act 1990 and Weapons Regulation 2016 to be completed every 12 months by Security Providers who hold a Security Firearms Licence 'Employee' or 'Sole Provider'.

For section 124(2) of the Act, an applicant for renewal of a security licence (guard) must complete an approved safety training course (security guard) within the 60 day period immediately before the day of the application.

This course is to be delivered by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) who has the scope to deliver it.

The course consists of a written assessment and a live fire certification shoot at an approved firing range for the following categories:

  • C (shotgun)
  • E (ballistics vest)
  • H (semi-automatic pistol)
  • H (revolver)

Pre Requisites

You must have a current Security Firearms Guard Licence – Employee or Sole Provider.


This course is delivered over 1 day. However there is pre-course reading to be completed prior to attending the class.

Required Student Equipment

Students are required to bring a notepad, pen, current Security Firearms Licence and suitable clothing when attending the Live Fire Assessments on the Shooting Range. (Long pants, Belt, hat, closed in shoes, snug fitting top to repel discharged casings). If you wish to use your own PPE i.e. eye and hearing protection you may. It is recommended you bring drinking water as the range does get quite hot.
