AQF Volume of Learning

AQF Description Breadth, depth and complexity of knowledge and skills would prepare a person to perform in a range of varied activities or knowledge application where there is a clearly defined range of contexts in which the choice of actions required is usually clear and there is limited complexity in the range of options to be applied.

Performance of a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and some accountability for the quality of outcomes. Applications may include some complex or non-routine activities involving individual responsibility or autonomy and /or collaboration with others as part of a group or team.

The volume of learning of a Certificate III is typically 1 - 2 years. The notional duration of the Volume of Learning is calculated on the basis that a student has no prior skills and knowledge.

Volume of Learning The definition provided by the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) 2nd Edition January 2013:
“The volume of learning is a dimension of the complexity of a qualification. It is used with the level criteria and qualification type descriptor to determine the depth and breadth of the learning outcomes of a qualification. The volume of learning identifies the notional duration of all activities required for the achievement of the learning outcomes specified for a particular AQF qualification type. It is expressed in equivalent full-time years.”
